There are many qualities that make a great coach. Although these are numerous, we have narrowed these down and compiled a list below to act as a useful guide in determining the qualities that will set you apart from others and help you to become the coach you want to be.

A coach with integrity is someone who can be relied upon to be confidential, work in line with their values, is honest and can be trusted to do what they say they will do. Integrity is of the utmost importance, as is authenticity. When you are being authentic, or your true self, there is something appealing in this behaviour to which others are able to relate and respond.

Encouraging others to step outside of their comfort zone and push the limits of what they ‘think’ they can achieve to what you ‘know’ or ‘believe’ they can achieve can have an enormous impact - making valuable inroads to achieving their goal, eliciting major insights, improving self confidence and becoming more self aware.

Accepting others as they are – no judgements, without prejudice, with tolerance. When you are compassionate and have empathy, you create an environment that feels safe to open up in and talk honestly. This quality enables coaches to dig deeper and get to the underlying issues.

Pay attention! Become aware of those around you. How do they differ from you? What makes them unique? What makes them ‘tick’? Each of us is a one of a kind. We have our own talents and aspirations, thoughts, prejudices, fears and problems. These will form the basis of your work with your clients, so get acquainted with perspectives, views, emotional boundaries and weaknesses that may differ vastly from yours.

A successful coach is positive, optimistic and enthusiastic about their clients’ success both individually and collectively and this tends to rub off on their own clients as well as others outside this circle. Motivation can be achieved through inspiration, generating self belief and desire through fresh, fun and challenging approaches - making things seem possible again.

Detachment is not about aloofness or a lack of sensitivity. It is maintaining an objective perspective of a certain situation so as to enable others to move forward with their best interest in mind.

To be a great coach you must love what you are doing; be strongly committed to the success of each and every one of your clients and always look out for their best interests.
